Centre for Climate Change

Recognizing the catastrophic problem of Global Climate Change, the EMRPI, established the Centre for Climate Change to assess on a comprehensive, objective, open and transparent basis the scientific, technical and socio economic information relevant to Climate Change and understanding its potential impacts and options for adaptation and mitigation. As entrusted by the Government of Karnataka, the work of preparing the "Karnataka State Action Plan on Climate Change (SAPCC) – 1st Assessment" was undertaken by EMPRI. The KSAPCC has outlined various challenges and has also given feasible action points to be implemented by various sectors of administration in the state.EMPRI has also been designated as the State Nodal Agency for Climate Change for Karnataka. It is essential to anchor all climate related knowledge available in every nook and corner of the state in a common platform and make it available to use as knowledge products, information and data to undertake climate compatible planning, implementation and monitoring, which will help to facilitate respective stakeholders in undertaking activities and projects on climate change. The Government of Karnataka has sanctioned a New scheme on Climate Change to strengthen the capacity of EMPRI as the Nodal Agency. Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change had provided funds for establishing its climate change unit in EMPRI for implementation of SAPCC action points and training the executive staff from various sectors of public administration in the State of Karnataka. In view of the long-term nature of the climate change issue and the very broad scope and dimensions of the problem, it will be important to develop a diverse portfolio of capacity-building interventions in a targeted and strategic manner. With the assistance of Mission for Strategic Knowledge on Climate Change programme (NMSKCC) of Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, the Centre for Climate Change has been strengthened to Karnataka State Strategic Knowledge Centre for Climate Change in 2016.
